Guys that Rock

Well a lot’s happened since our last blog. The Braves lost about a quarter of their pitching staff to injury and John Smoltz logged his 3,000th strike out, further cementing his status as a first ballot hall of famer. He’s one of only 16 men to ever accomplish the feat. More guys have won 300 games or hit 500 home runs. What’s more impressive is that he did it while losing two years to injury, and in spite of a handful of years in the bullpen pitching less than 80 innings a year. I think we’re finally starting to realize how special that rotation was in the nineties.

A lot of cool things are coming up in May (not just Smoltz’ birthday, it’s May 15th if you want to send him a card). My good buddy Dr. Roy Rockman is coming into town to lecture on the 14th. I’m looking forward to talking to him about how awesome Hank Steinbrenner seems to be for the Yankees. Macy has a dance recital on the 3rd and Kim and I are driving down. I have no idea how her dancing will be, but I have no doubt she will make it (for better or for worse) spectacular in some way. Don’t worry, there will be video cameras at the ready. We’re also hoping to catch one of Jordan’s games while we’re there. It’ll be the first we’ll get to see this season. All the scouting reports I’ve been getting on him have been excellent, so I’m fully excited to see him in person.

On a dental note, there are a couple of guys who are very important to our practice and our patients that I’d like to introduce you to (actually there are a lot of individuals who help us do what we do and I’ll probably talk about more of them as time goes by, but these two guys are directly involved in patient care). Mark Fiebiger and Lawson Rackley are the dental technicians who actually fabricate many of the dental prosthetics that we deliver to patients on a daily basis. Mark fabricates our removable prostheses (dentures, partials, splints, etc.) and Lawson fabs our fixed prostheses (crowns, bridges, and some implant components). These guys are exceptionally talented and remarkably similar (and not just in the fact that they tolerate multiple long winded phone calls from me dissecting the minutia of each and every case). Lawson’s lab is here in Athens and Mark is in Augusta, but both graduated together from MCG. Both had fathers who were superlative dentists. Mark’s dad, Dr. Guy Fiebiger, taught in the Prosthetic Department at MCG and Lawson’s dad, Dr. Hunter Rackley, practiced in Millen, GA and was the president of the Georgia Dental Association. Both of these men made great contributions to dentistry in Georgia. So many times I’ve been at meetings and you’ll hear people say, “Guy Fiebiger showed me this,” or , “Hunter Rackley used to say…”

But to be honest, more than dads or me, the most important thing these two gentlemen have in common is an exceptional talent for their craft and a commitment to excellence. I say it all the time, because it’s true, but Lawson stacks porcelain as deep as I’ve ever seen and no one casts a big piece of metal as well as Mark Fiebiger. Basically these guys rock and are two of the reasons that I love my profession and I wanted you guys to know about them.

Finally, in office news, those of you who have been in in the last month know that Kayla is off to hygiene school and we are so excited for her. Meggin Roberts one of our part time team members (and full time ray of sunshine/fireball) also got accepted to hygiene school, but she’ll be hanging around for maybe another month or so.

I hope Spring is agreeing with you all. See you in the chair.

Thanks Kim. If all you guys haven't figured it out yet, Kim (Landrum) is one of our guru buddies over at Plexus Web Creations. She's a graphic designer/super mom extraordinaire. Plexus setup and manages our website and we love them too.
